PRESS RELEASE
SUMP PUMP DISCHARGE
6/11/08
The City of Jefferson is asking all residents to discharge the water from their sump pumps to the outside of their home. The water from the sump pump should either be kept on your property or discharged directly to the street.
Water from sump pumps that discharge into floor drains goes directly into the sanitary sewer system and is a main contributor to overloading the sewer lines and sewer treatment plant. The result of these overloaded sewer lines causes backups into not only your basement but also your neighbor’s basements. The plant typically treats less than one million gallons of sewage per day but because of the wet conditions it is approaching its five million gallon per day capacity.
