GCCC

This month we will be meeting Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at GCCC. Lunch will be available for $5.00 and available at 11:45am. Please call to let the office know if you will be attending and having a lunch.

Administration/GCCC
Vicky, Lisa and I attended the IPRA Fall Workshop in Cedar Rapids. There were many good seminars offered and networking opportunities with recreation professionals around the state. Several events have been held at the GCCC during September including the GCMC Auxiliary Table Talk luncheon and a carnival to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network. The Sports Complex committee met this month to discuss progress of feasibility study. MD Construction provided committee with list of questions needed to be answered for the feasibility study. The GCCC 10th anniversary committee met to discuss plans for the anniversary celebration set for November 15.

Recreation
Coed Softball Tournament – Our annual adult softball tournament was held Sept. 20, 21 at the City Ball Fields. We had eight teams participate in the tournament, most teams were local we did have one team from Woodward and one from Perry.
Mini Cheerleading – Ann Ostendorf held her Fall Mini Cheerleading clinic and the participants performed before a varsity football game at Linduska field. 75 participants.
Doggie Paddle – In cooperation with Linn Price and the Animal Protection and Education Charity, we held our annual “Doggie Paddle” at the pool. The weather was not ideal and the turnout was lower than last year. 15 dogs.
Placekick, Punt and Throw – The annual event sponsored by the Iowa Parks and Recreation Association was held at Linduska Field on Sept. 30. Winners will advance to regional competition in Ankeny on Oct. 11. 15 participants

Pool
Closed for the winter. The Water Dept. and parks crew have been winterizing the pool and placing equipment in storage. We will be addressing the new main drain requirements, which go into effect Dec. 20, 2008. The Virginia Graeme Baker Act requires all pools to have stringent standards for the outlet grates. The State of Iowa has put out a bulletin announcing that all pools in Iowa our currently out of compliance.

Parks/Cemetery
Parks crew had 1 funeral this month. The parks crew has been busy mowing and trimming once again this month, usually in September things start to slow down a bit but this has been and unusual season. New fall surfacing has been added to Russell and Kelso Parks and the timber borders have been remove.
