MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Jefferson Public Library is to ensure our patrons free access to books, and other resources and services for education, information, and recreation – through a balanced collection of print and non-print resources. We seek to build knowledge, understanding, appreciation and wisdom in our adults, young people, and children. The library serves to help the community grow into adulthood and then seeks to meet the needs of that maturity.

HISTORY

The Jefferson Public Library was founded in 1901. A $10,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation in 1903 enabled the city to construct the existing library building. In 1967, a new addition was built to house the growing collections. Renovations completed in 1990 made the library handicapped accessible. The Galaxy Automation System, which computerized the card catalog and circulation functions of the library, was installed in 1995. In 2005, a new automation system called Polaris was installed, making the library collection accessible via the World Wide Web.

GOVERNANCE

The Jefferson Public Library is an administrative department of the City of Jefferson. Five trustees, appointed by the Mayor and City Council, set library policy. The trustees employ a director and staff who are responsible for the library’s day-to-day operation. The Library Board of Trustees meets on the first Monday after the first Tuesday of each month at 8:00 pm in the adult department of the library.

The policies adopted by the Board of Trustees are available to the public for review at the circulation desk. The board reviews every policy at least once each year.

The Jefferson Public Library is accredited by the State Library of Iowa, meeting the criteria for high quality library service.

Friends of the Library

Yes! A very active Friends of the Library group was formed in 1993. Their purpose is twofold; to serve as the Library’s ambassadors to the community and conduct Library fundraisers. Two annual fundraisers are held: a membership drive, and a used book sale in the library basement, both held in October. Each dollar raised goes back to the Library to help purchase items or support programs over and above the Library’s annual operating budget. Annual memberships are available starting at $2.00. If you are interested in becoming a Friend of the Library, want to learn more about their activities, or want to know the date of the annual used book sale, please visit the library website at www.jefferson.lib.ia.us.
